Description:
The bay scallop, Argopecten irradians concentricus is one of 4 distinct subspecies of A. irradians.  This species grows 2 -3 inches, with generally equal valves, though the lower valve is typically somewhat deeper than the upper valve.  Body color in the upper valve is bluish gray to brown, while the lower valve is generally white.

Habitat:
Bay scallops are generally found in semi-enclosed bays and estuaries in water depths from 1 to 60 feet.  Typical habitat is on sandy, vegetated, bottoms.  Young attach themselves to seagrasses or algae via a byssus similar to that of mussels.

Range:
A. irradians concentricus ranges form New Jersey and Maryland south to Georgia, Florida and Louisiana.
