Description:
Gray sea cucumbers grow to approximately 10 inches.  The body is flattened on the ventral side, which is covered with yellow-tipped tube feet.  The dorsal body surface has 6 rows of papillae which project from large warts, each of which is surrounded by 5 - 10 tube feet.  The mouth is surrounded by 20 - 25 bushy yellow tentacles.  Body color is variable, but generally is red or yellow-red contrasting with shades of brown and white mottling.  Papillae near the mouth are typically white with yellow tips.

Habitat:
Gray sea cucumbers typically inhabit seagrass beds and sandy bottom areas.  In Florida they are also associated with worm reefs constructed by the sabellariid polychaete Phragmatopoma lapidosa.

Range:
Gray sea cucumbers range from Florida south through the Bahamas to Brazil.  they are also reported from West Africa.
