Description:
Gray sea cucumbers grow to approximately 10 inches. The body is
flattened on the ventral side, which is covered with yellow-tipped tube
feet. The dorsal body surface has 6 rows of papillae which project
from large warts, each of which is surrounded by 5 - 10 tube feet. The
mouth is surrounded by 20 - 25 bushy yellow tentacles. Body color is
variable, but generally is red or yellow-red contrasting with shades of
brown and white mottling. Papillae near the mouth are typically white
with yellow tips.
Habitat:
Gray sea cucumbers typically inhabit seagrass beds and sandy bottom areas.
In Florida they are also associated with worm reefs constructed by the
sabellariid polychaete Phragmatopoma lapidosa.
Range:
Gray sea cucumbers range from Florida south through the Bahamas to Brazil.
they are also reported from West Africa.
