Description:
The black ball sponge is also referred to as the pillow stinking sponge. Overall body color is medium to dark gray, with the body surface covered with wart-like bumps that may be 1/3 inch high.  Body shape is variable and may be pillow-like, lobed, or flattened as is shown in the photo.  Grows 1 - 1.5 feet, and emits a noxious odor when removed from the water.

Habitat:
Prefers bright sunlight and inhabits coral reefs at shallow to mid-depths of 15 - 75 feet. 

Range:
Ranges throughout Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean where it can be locally abundant.  Occurs on hard substrates in the Indian River Lagoon.
