Kingdom Phylum/Division Class: Order: Family: Genus:
Protista Bacillariophyta Coscinodiscophyceae - - Aulacoseira

    Species Description

The cells in a chain are cylindrical and united by the flat valve margins to form filamentous colonies (Fig. 1, line drawing from Hustedt 1930; double arrow delimits the area shown in Fig. 2) that may be planktonic or entangled in benthic vegetation. The marginal spines joining adjacent valves are interlocking via their spathulate apices (Fig. 2, SEM of adjacent valves + mantles). Areolae on the mantle are slit-like, oriented in the apical axis, and usually in straight or slightly curved rows numbering 18-25 rows in 10µm. The species varies in diameter from 3-30µm, with a mantle height of 9-20µm according to Crawford et al. (2003). Resting spores are known for the species but were not seen.

This is a freshwater species with a worldwide distribution, though it may occur in waters with comparatively high mineral content. It probably is not surviving in the IRL system, and was seen only rarely at the mouth of the San Sebastian River, Taylor Creek, and St. Lucie River.
