Protista Bacillariophyta Coscinodiscophyceae - - Melosira

    Species Description

The cells in a filamentous chain are cylindrical in girdle view with adjacent cells closely adpressed (Fig. 1, modified from Hustedt 1931). The valves are rather flat, with 1-2 irregular rows of spines around the margin (Fig. 1, left). Most of the remaining valve surface is covered with smaller spiked granules, with 15-30 rimoportulae scattered among the granules. There is also an irregular ring of rimoportulae in the mantle area. The chloroplasts are irregularly discoid, parietal and numerous (Fig. 2, living cells)

The reported diameter of cells is 8-35µm; in the IRL 22-28µm. The species has a worldwide distribution in brackish and estuarine waters, as well as fresh water with high mineral content (Hustedt 1930). It is rare in the IRL, but not uncommon in the San Sebastian River mouth at various times throughout the year. Its habitat is normally benthic and epiphytic, but can be found in the plankton as well.
