  1. TAXONOMY

Kingdom Phylum/Division Class: Order: Family: Genus:
Protista Bacillariophyta Mediophyceae - - Discostella

    Species Description

Cells are solitary and drum-shaped, with a prominent star-shaped central structure in valve view (Fig. 1, two valves, LM interference contrast). One valve is convex and concentrically undulate the other valve is slightly concave. This stellate pattern consists of alveoli or external ridges, depending on whether the valve is convex or not (Fig. 2, SEM). Radial costae, separated by radial rows of areolae, extend from the margin to nearly ½ radius (Fig. 3, TEM). At the margin are a single row of fultoportulae and one rimoportula (Fig. 3). The costae number about 8-12 in 10µm. Individual cells are 6-18µm in diameter

This species is found mostly in fresh water (Hustedt 1930), usually recorded as Cyclotella stelligera (Houk & Klee 2004), but has previously been recorded in Florida coastal waters (Prasad & Nienow 2006), so some strains are clearly somewhat halotolerant. In the IRL, it was recorded from the St. Lucie River estuary and the mouth of the San Sebastian River.
