Protista Bacillariophyta Coscinodiscophyceae - - Eunotogramma

    Species Description

Cells of this species are asymmetrical in the apical plane, with valves convex on the dorsal side and straight on the ventral side (Fig. 1; line drawing, modified from Van Heurck 1880-85, Pl. 126). There are well-developed internal transverse costae; 2 or 3 in small cells and up to 10 in the largest cells (Amspoker 2011). Amspoker describes simple areolae radiating from a central annulus on the valve (not usually visible with light microscopy) and numbering 18-23 in 10µm (Fig. 2, SEM in girdle view). However, areolar rows in Figure 2 number about 40 in 10µm, which may relate to the ‘hyaline’ description of the valves by other authors using light microscopy. That number is beyond visualization in the light microscope. Each valve has a rimoportula on the mantle on the ventral side (Fig. 2, arrows) and variable development of spinules at the valve margin. The apical axis varies from 7 to 48µm with a width of 4-9µm (Amspoker 2011). The pervalvar axis varies according to the number of bands in the cingulum

The species is widespread in warmer waters but is apparently rare throughout its range. It is solitary or occurs in short chains and lives on sand grains (Round et al. 1990). It is quite rare in the IRL system, and was found only in Sebastian and Fort Pierce inlets.
